Insanity workout recovery week is here!

Insanity workout logo

Did someone say RECOVERY? When I think of recovery it certainly isn’t what we did in our first Core Cardio and Balance RECOVERY workout… wow! That being said, it sure is a nice “change of pace” anyway!

As usual, I decided to go into this workout blind. Since the beginning (after previewing the first fit test) I decided that I wasn’t going to preview any other workout, I was just going to go for it.  A  So, when I started Core Cardio and Balance last night I was anticipating some stretching, maybe some light exercise, instruction, etc. That’s what I get for thinking! Just as in everything else we do, Core Cardio and Balance fits right into Insanity.

Not that I don’t enjoy them all, but I especially enjoyed last nights workout. I wasn’t huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf trying to flush out the three little pigs, but what we did do offered a different intensity that you could really “feel” working as you moved along…. and it still made you sweat like a “little pig!” ;)

The results I’m seeing at the midway point of Insanity are exceptional. In the last week I’ve really noticed a significant change in definition, especially in my upper arms and legs, as well as conditioning. What I’m able to do on the treadmill now blows my mind and I know that it’s Insanity that has helped me get there.

I would like to offer a special note of thanks to my wife Tami who helped me lift my legs during the final exercises of RECOVERY last night… LOL! “Thanks babe, you’re the best!”

I’m looking forward to P90X and RevAbs after Insanity. P90X is going will be next in my BeachBody journey.

If you are looking for a fitness challenge, the BeachBody programs do the trick… and they are a whole lot of fun, if such a thing can be said about a fitness program.

Have a great day and God bless!

How to use the Harris Benedict Equation to lose weight

Today, on “Confessions of Yesterdays Fat Guy” we get to watch Rex eat Crow and Humble Pie as part of his calorie intake… ;) !! Good grief…

As I mentioned in my last post, when you make a decision to take on a fitness or weight loss program, follow it to the letter, EVEN IF you question it. After all, you spent money on that program so it should stand to reason that the experts SHOULD know what they are talking about… “Have a little faith Rex…” LOL!

Anyhow… today I want to take a few minutes to share something that is making a huge difference in my weight loss journey… the Harris Benedict Equation.

For those who are unfamiliar, the Harris Benedict Equation is a formulation developed to help people determine their BMI (Basic Metabolic Rate) and utilize basic math to either gain or lose weight based on their needs, wants or desires.

For those who want to lose weight, there is A LOT of good news for you in using this equation.

Here is what the equation looks like for both men and women. There are two separate scales for each… one in pounds (LBS) and one in kilograms (KG):

BMR calculation for men (KG): BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kg ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) – ( 6.76 x age in years )
BMR calculation for men (LBS): BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) – ( 6.76 x age in years )

BMR calculation for women (KG): BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kg ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm ) – ( 4.7 x age in years )
BMR calculation for women (LBS): BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) – ( 4.7 x age in years )

From here, we take the first calculation and do a second calculation based on this scale…

Little to no exercise: Daily calories needed= BMR x 1.2
Light exercise (1-3 days per week): Daily calories needed= BMR x 1.375
Moderate exercise (3-5 days per week): Daily calories needed= BMR x 1.55
Heavy exercise (6-7 days per week): Daily calories needed= BMR x 1.725
Very heavy exercise (twice per day, extra heavy workouts): Daily calories needed= BMR x 1.9

Depending on your current weight you will either be delighted or horrified based on your current eating habits. If you are underweight and want to gain muscle mass then this scale might be looked on as your friend. If you are severely obese and are eating 10,000 calories per day (consisting of Big Macs, bon bons and monkey bread) then you are might be disappointed based on your current mindset. Always remember though that “when you change your mind, your body WILL follow!”

For the first three weeks of Insanity I ignored this scale and went about the exercises while trying to stay under 2000 calories per day THINKING that the numbers this scale gave me couldn’t be right so if I cut huge calories I should lose massive weight. Guess what, I didn’t lose a pound… in fact, I fluctuated up and down by two pounds for the better part of three weeks.

If you don’t follow these numbers to the letter you can count on ZERO results when it comes to fat and weight loss. Long story short, if you are going to work out at that level your body NEEDS the fuel so it’s okay to eat, just make sure it’s healthy and managed.

Here’s what the scale looks like for me, right now…

Scale: 66 + (6.23 X Weight In Pounds) + (12.7 X
Height In Inches) – (6.8 X Age In Years) = TOTAL
X 1.55 or 1.7 based on exercise volume.

- 500 for weight loss
-0 if you want to stay the same
+ 500 if you want to gain weight

66 + 1713.25 = 1779.25
12.7 X 71.5 = 908.05
6.8 X 39 = 265.2

4117.57 – 500 = 3617.57

Can you believe that? I should be eating 3617.57 calories per day to lose weight? I couldn’t believe it! In fact, like I stated above, I doubted it! Turns out I was wrong. I started eating the way the Insanity Nutrition Guide told me to and the weight started coming off again.

Why? Because my body needs the calories for fuel. I’m working out twice a day. I lift weights every other morning alternated with daily cardio at the gym and then I do Shaun T’s Insanity workout in the evening. Now that I’ve been doing this daily for a month my metabolism is insane! The reason I’m losing weight is because even though I’m eating 3600 calories per day, my body is burning even more than that, thus the weight loss.

If you don’t eat enough to fuel your body bad things happen like catabolism where your body is breaking down healthy tissue for fuel (you don’t want that) or it will actually hold on to the fat it has already stored (versus burning it) because it’s believes it needs to because your aren’t giving it enough fuel.

Think of your body like a car. If you don’t give a car enough fuel it goes very slow or won’t run at all. If you pump the gas to much the car can become flooded and not start because the engine is getting to much fuel. The same thing applies to your body when it comes to food. If you don’t give it enough it will feel sluggish and tired and not do what you want it to do. If you give it to much fuel (over eat) you feel bloated and slow and fat. There has to be a balance.

You might even go so far as to say that we’ve all been lead astray with the thinking that we need three square meals per day. This is old school thinking and certainly doesn’t fit into a program of extreme fitness and/or weight loss. To keep your metabolism working for you, you need a consistent routine of strength training to build muscle, cardio exercise to burn fat and frequent, smaller meals throughout the day to keep the body working at peak performance.

Eating healthy is vital. You can’t do this and still eat garbage that isn’t good for you. When this system is combined with quality, “good for your body” foods then you have a plan of attack for getting healthy and fit!

With the nutrition program I’m following right now I can even have peanut butter sandwiches again! It’s not all about veggies and protein like so many want you to believe. In fact, the right amount of carbs, especially for muscle development, is essential to both weight gain or weight loss. The difference now? My PB and J isn’t the standard white bread, sugar loaded jelly and gobs of peanut butter, it’s 2 tbsp. of low fat peanut butter on healthy 12 grain bread with fresh blue berries instead of jelly… and you know what? It’s WAY better than the other!

Well, I’ve rambled on enough here and it’s time for my pre-workout snack before I head to the gym. I hope you have found this information useful.

Have a great day and God bless!

Insanity Week 1 Complete, Week 2 Started Today

“… and on the seventh day, Shaun rested!” Insanity 1:1

LOL! Wow, I just finished my day number 8 workout (after a much appreciated day of rest yesterday… thanks Shaun!) and I’m amazed how far I have come in a week.

I’m seeing results in my legs, arms and stomach (which is really cool!) but, more impressively, I’m noticing a significant increase in endurance along the ability to perform and execute the exercises with the precision that Shaun teaches them.

I’m not the most coordinated guy on the planet (spare tire doesn’t help), but when I can balance on one leg without feeling like the Leaning Tower Of Pisa it’s encouraging! My Heisman is looking more like a Heisman and less like the Private Pile it was on day 2 plus I can do more reps correctly throughout the workout.

I still can’t do the push ups on the floor yet (Dr. says not ready for that) so I’m doing them inclined on a chair and I’m still getting great results. I’m hoping there will be enough new muscle formed in my chest, in the next few weeks, to where I can do the push ups on the floor.

Even a 39 year old, former fat guy, heart valve recipient (when I put my MIND to it) can do Insanity. Don’t make excuses… take action and do something that will change the course of your life. It doesn’t have to be Insanity necessarily, but something that is going to transform your body and your mind and take you to places you didn’t THINK were possible.

The only one stopping your from doing what needs to be done is you! Anything you wish to achieve in life can be reached through faith!

Insanity workout day 3 complete plus appetite info!

Insanity workout day three Insanity workout day 3 is in the books. Props to my wife Tamara for joining in today just to see how insane this really is!

Even after day three I’m already noticing some changes. Foremost, is the endurance. I was able to go through Cardio Power and Resistance today and do the workout efficiently and effectively.

Don’t get me wrong, it kicked my butt… but my form and ability to finish a circuit with less rest were noticeably improved.

The stretches went much more smooth today as well. Overall, Insanity is worth every penny invested, and drop of sweat,  so far!

Now, a dietary note. I’ve talked, quite a bit about appetite suppression and many of the readers here have commented on how hard it is to get appetite under control. That was a huge issue for me, for the longest time. However, since incorporating a higher protein level into my diet and adjusting my calories the way Insanity taught me too, I have notice a significant decrease in appetite. In fact, I’m having to force myself to eat five 300 to 400 calorie meals per day and I’m not craving food before bed time anymore. I’m excited to see what happens at my next weigh in… I might just hit double digits for the first time since I started this journey.

The whole Beach Body system is proving to be impressive from a people stand point. I’ve made some great new friends YouTube and the support is phenomenal. Thanks to Jeremy, Jason and Joe for the support… much appreciated guys!

Insanity workout day number two completed!

They say that the things that won’t kill you will make you stronger…

so, judging by that, as I have survived my first plyometric cardio circuit with Shaun T, then today should be one of the greatest days of my life… wow.

After 4 and a half months back in the gym, THINKING I was getting into shape… LOL! Insanity showed me, today, just how mistaken I was.

I would love to report to everyone that it went super smooth and I was able to do the whole thing like a champion, but the truth of the matter is that my Heisman looked more like a “Private Pile”, my stretches looked something like you buy from the pretzel stand at the mall and, by the time it was over, I was a heaving pile of a mess gasping for my existence as I crashed to the floor.

All of that being said, I finished, I’m still alive and, believe it or not, I’m looking forward to tomorrow!

The reality of this weight loss journey hit home today as I was doing the required jumps and feeling the excess fat on my back sliding up and down as I went. I don’t know what it is about the human mind that takes you to a place that you just don’t care about that as you shove another chocolate chip cookie into your face, but when you are trying to get rid of it, you begin to care. I’ve said this so many times and I’ll say it again… if you are going to make a transformation with your life your mind has to be right. Get the mind right and your body will follow!

This is the first exercise program, I’ve ever used, where you really feel like the instructor is right there in the room with you. You get the push you need… it’s as if Shaun can see you through the dvd player.

If you are looking for a new fitness challenge then I highly recommend that you check out Shaun T’s Insanity! Once you start, just do it, even if you can’t do it as fast as the people on the DVD, just do it… keep moving, stay in form and… oh yeah, KEEP MOVING! Make sure to attach the garden hose to the kitchen faucet because your going to need water… you are going to sweat buckets of it.

Shaun T’s Insanity Workout Fitness Test Day 1

Shaun T's Insanity Workout Day 1 Pictures

I haven’t been through a workout, like this, since the PT we were put through back in Basic Training. At that time I was fresh out of high school. Starting the Insanity workout today brought back a lot of memories.

The fitness test put me through my paces. Surprisingly, I was able to do something in every test. I have a long ways to go, a lot of form to work on and I need to get the exercises right, but I’m on my way and looking forward to tomorrows workout.

Shaun T’s Insanity workout is intense and lives up to it’s name. I can see why it does what it does, it’s no joke! I’ll be blogging updates every day or so and will be adding a new video every 10 days until the journey has been completed.

Cheers!

Yesterdays Fat Guy orders Shaun T’s Insanity Workout

So I was watching a little TV last night, before bed, when I ran across this infomercial (again) that has been nagging at me for a few weeks now. If you haven’t already seen this, it lives up to the name. I’ve been watching Jason Croxford on YouTube who has been doing this and the results he’s getting are most impressive.

You can check Jason out online at BetterBody90.com

After a couple of weeks deliberation I decided to order Shaun T’s Insanity last night (part of the Beach Body system.) It will be interesting to see how it goes.

I will be documenting the journey through Insanity here on Yesterdays Fat Guy, so it should be interesting and it might even be funny, if it doesn’t kill me.

I’ll keep you posted!

Fat Loss 4 Idiots Review

Click here to learn more about Fat Loss 4 Idiots

Lose 9 pounds in 11 days! Is it really possible to lose 9 pounds every 11 days? After receiving more Twitter spam on this particular product than I do for most of the others, I decided to invest the $39 to see what the buzz was all about.  What I was expecting was another e-book that told me the same thing the others do.  What I found was the exact opposite and it’s pretty freakin’ cool!

One of the first things to impact my decision to purchase this product was the sales page.  The pitch page is impressive and very convincing. You can tell, before ordering, that there was some thought and effort put into this system. Once I had completed a purchase the product did not disappoint.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots is quite a unique approach to fat burning and weight loss. What you won’t find is the usual calorie counting approach that has basically become the staple of the weight loss industry. Fat Loss 4 Idiots uses food, primarily, to trigger your metabolism into utilizing the food that you eat to burn fat scientifically.

I’m a calorie counter and that has served me well along the path of my weight loss journey. However, the information contained within Fat Loss 4 Idiots makes perfect sense once you’ve learned a little about how the body metabolizes food.

The information alone is worth the $39 investment, but Fat Loss 4 Idiots is more than just your typical e-book… it’s a system, an interactive weight loss system where you choose the foods you eat and the system builds your diet around your choices. Choose from an 11 day diet or a diet that loses slower over time.

Part of the reason I purchased Fat Loss 4 Idiots was due to a weight loss plateau hit in the 280’s. I was able to drop a large amount of weight quickly over the last few months and then about mid September I was just stuck between 286 and 282. For some reason my weight just went up and down there so I had to make a change. After incorporating some of what I learned in Fat Loss 4 Idiots (and I’ve only owned it for three days now) I went from (my last weigh in at) 282 (on the day of purchase) to 278 when I weighed in this morning. I need to lose 15 pounds to reach my goal of 100 pounds lost for 2009 and this is certainly going to help.

My wife and I have purchased a handful of the major weight loss programs seen on TV, our latest being “the Skinny Switch.”  While I’m not going to knock any of the products (don’t need any hassles with lawyers… ;) ) I will say that I am finding Fat Loss 4 Idiots to be the LEAST complex weight loss program that I have seen yet.  The system is simple to use and it doesn’t require fancy recipes and the creation of fancy dishes that most people don’t eat on a daily basis.  It shows you how to lose the weight by eating the right foods, in the right quantity at the right time.

You don’t have to worry about counting calories or going hungry with Fat Loss 4 Idiots.  One of the aspects of the program I really like is that you can eat until your satisfied.  Don’t get me wrong, you can’t pig out and expect the program to work, but you don’t have to starve yourself either.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots is for anyone who needs to lose weight right now, has difficulty with exercise but still needs to lose weight, or as in my case, anyone who has hit a weight loss plateau and needs to change things up a bit.

On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a definite 10 and well worth the $39 invested.  I’m looking forward to getting more great results with this product!

Cheers!

How to (and why to) write a good weight loss article

It might seem over simplified but it makes sense. If you are focusing energy on writing a weight loss article or content for your weight loss blog then you are not focusing on food and/or eating.

When it comes to losing weight one of the biggest challenges is changing habits. Taking your story to the Internet gives you an outlet… a place where you can focus on sharing information, tips, successes and even failures that might help someone else find success in the weight loss journey.

No one can tell your story like you so why not write it down? You don’t need to be an expert to share experiences. As you progress in your journey, and learn more about living a healthy lifestyle, the more information you will have that you can incorporate into writing.

If you put a little effort into it you can even get paid for your content through places like eHow, FireHow and more. Utilizing article sites is also a great way to get quicker search engine listings because most of the article sites have a high page rank. As your content has become part of the content of a site with a high page rank, it’s easier to get listed under better key phrases. From there, simply create an inbound link to your blog and you can generate larger volumes of traffic.

Creating great content is also a good way to generate traffic through the social networks. If you have something to say and are willing to give some actual value in your content (not just writing tidbits to attract sales as so many do…) then you can develop an audience that will help spread the word about your blog, bringing even more traffic.

Another good idea when it comes to creating content and giving exceptional value is to find a great incentive (gift) that you can give through your blog or article. If you have some experience in web publication you can even create an incentive package. (See the Mind and Body Makeover as an example.)

When writing a blog or article here are some things to consider:

1.) Open with a segment of your story. Share a problem that you have encountered, or a problem you have solved.

2.) Offer a list of tools or items one may need to solve the problem or answer a question.

3.) Create steps that walk the reader through the problem to the solution.

4.) Offer Do’s and Don’ts or suggestions, tips and or warnings.

eHow offers the perfect layout for creating articles, it’s free to join and you can even get paid for the content you create.

You won’t burn a ton of calories typing but focusing your efforts and giving and helping others, while sharing your story, will help you consume less of them!

Cheers!

Lose 9 Pounds In 11 Days!

Finding a weight loss program that’s right for you!

The race to fitness is on and a lot of people are getting into the band wagon. Some people do it to achieve a sexy body, some people just do it because they are embarrassed with the body they have now, while others do it simply to remain fit and heatlthy. As such, many fitness programs are out in the internet, in gyms, spas and fitness centers all over. Some are too expensive to afford that one may even lose weight just by trying to work out the money needed to pursue these fitness programs.

One may not have to go to the gym or the spa or any fitness center and spend much just to slim down to obtain that longed for sexy body. There are many books available in the bookstore which offer weight loss programs which are convenient and for free, of course the books are not though. These weight loss programs, or diet plans are gaining immense popularity with so much publicity, testimonials and reviews that one may be confused which exactly to follow. So before choosing which weight loss plan to follow, try reading these summaries about the most popular diet programs out today.

Atkins’ New Diet Revolution by Dr. Atkins. This weight loss program encourages high protein diet and a trim down on the carbs. One can feast on vegetables and meat but should fast on bread and pasta. One is also not restricted against fat intake so it is okay to pour in the salad dressing and freely spread on the butter. However, after the diet, one may find himself lacking on fiber and calcium yet high in fat. Intake of grains and fruits are also limited.

Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet by Drs. Heller. This diet plan advocates low carbohyrate eating. Approves on eating meats, vegetables and fruits, dairy and grain products. however, warns against taking in too much carb. “Reward” meal can be too high on fats and saturated fats.

Choose to Lose by Dr. Goor. Restrains fat intake. One is given a “fat” budget and he is given the liberty on how to spend it. It does not pressure the individual to watch his carbohydrate intake. Eating meat and poultry as well as low-fat dairy and seafoods is okay. A go signal is also given on eating vegetables, fruits, cereals, bread and pasta. This weight loss plan is fairly healthy, good amounts of fruits and vegetables as well as saturated fats. Watch triglyceride levels though; if high, trim down the carbohydrates and tuck in more of the unsaturated fats.

The DASH Diet. Advocates moderate amounts of fat and protein intake and high on carbs. Primarily designed to lower blood pressure, the diet plan follows the pyramid food guide and encourages high intake of whole wheat grains as well as fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy. Some dieters think it advocates too much eating to procure significant weight loss.

Eat More, Weigh Less by Dr. Ornish. Primarily vegetarian fare and strictly low-fat. Gives the go signal on the “glow” foods but warns to watch it on non-fat dairy and egg whites. This diet is poor in calcium and retricts consumption of healthy foods like seafoods and lean poultry.

Eat Right for Your Type. Interesting because it is based on the person’s blood type. recommends plenty of mest for people with the blood type O. Diet plans for some blood types are nutritionally imbalanced and too low in calories. And for the record, there is even no proof that blood type affects dietary needs.

The Pritkin Principle. Focused on trimming the calorie density in eating by suggesting watery foods that make one feel full. Eating vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, pasta, soups, salads and low-fat dairy is okay. Although limits protein sources to lean meat, pseafood and poultry. Although it is healthy by providing low amounts of saturated fats and rich amounts of vegetables and fruits, it is also low on calcium and limits lean protein sources.

Volumetrics. For low-density calorie eating. Recommends the same foodstuff as Pritkin but restricts fatty or dry foods like popcorn, pretzels and crackers. This plan is reasonably healthy given the high amounts of fruits and vegetables as well as being low in calorie density and saturated fats.

The Zone. Moderately low on the carbs yet moderately high on the proteins. Encourages low-fat protein foods like fish and chicken plus veggies, fruits and grains. It is also healthy but lacking in grains and calcium.

Weight Watchers. High carbohydrates, moderate on fats and proteins. A very healthy diet plan and very flexible too. it allows the dieter to plan his own meal rather than give him a set to follow.

Appetite suppression and weight loss, what works?

Every now and again, when I log in to my Twitter account, I find something of value. As I was updating my Twitter background today I a Tweet came through talking of Fenugreek Extract and how it may aid in weight loss as an appetite suppressant.

I know that many of the people I have talked to, who are also on a weight loss journey, have shared their struggles with appetite. For some there’s a constant craving for food because the over eating has become an addiction ingrained in the mind. For others, the cravings hit at different times of the day with the most common hitting for many at night once they have become idle. Night time eating has been a huge struggle for me, so I can certainly relate.

There are several strategies for reducing appetite, when it comes to food. It has been said that protein and fiber help reduce appetite because they make you feel full for longer periods at a time. There are also numerous weight loss products available to help suppress appetite. I suppose this means that I could eat oatmeal or brand flakes in the morning if I were so inclined…

… but if those of us who are severely overweight are willing to be honest, many of us will agree that the reason our appetite has gotten out of control is because we have TRAINED it to be out of control. Think about it… the more we eat, the more we crave food, thus, our appetite has increased. But in this case it’s not a hungry body craving food, it’s an idle mind telling us to take action and eat.

Tell me if this doesn’t sound familiar… you’ve gone most of the day with very little to eat because you knew that you were going to pig out at dinner time. You know… hit the buffet, grab a big burger and fries, maybe even a beer if you’re so inclined…

… we save up for the occasion! Night time rolls around, you’ve only eaten one meal that day (however large it may have been) so now that mental hunger hits. Because of the fact that we starved ourselves all day it becomes easy to justify eating at night because, after all, we’ve only eaten once today. We don’t think about the fact that the one time we did eat, we probably consumed enough calories to carry ourselves through an entire day plus.

This was the story of my life for many years. What happens, I believe, is that many of us begin to mistake appetite for habit. A habit can nag and pull at you just as much, even more perhaps, than an actual healthy appetite for food. It becomes a vicious cycle and we begin to search for ways to reduce our appetite… but we’re still hungry, or so we think.

This type of appetite is going to be best suppressed in the mind. It’s our mind that has been trained by our bad habits so in order to break those bad habits we need to retrain our mind with good habits. I’ve mentioned this in previous posts, but I’m a firm believer (and I’m in the process of proving my theory) that when we take the initiative to get our mind in shape, our body will follow.

I found a great blog, last night, over on Blog Catalog entitled “Feel Thin and Be Thin.” In short, this is a blog that talks of utilizing the Law of Attraction as a weight loss method, which was right up my alley! I’m a huge believer in the Law of Attraction and have been using this for weight loss all year because it works.

It sounds a bit on the “to simple” side, but I assure you that there is nothing simple about it. The mental exercise required to recreate yourself is ever bit as intense as physical exercise. In fact, it is strenuous to the point that most people fail to put this Universal Law into action because it requires so much work. But, if you REALLY WANT to lose weight and make a change for the better in life then it’s well worth the effort.

The appetite of our mind needs to be nourished just as our bodies appetite. When these two appetites get out of sync or confused? Well, those of us who have dealt with being 100 pounds, or more, over weight have see the gruesome results.

Get the mind fit and the body will follow… think and feel fit and healthy, BE fit and healthy!

Cheers!

Are we making weight loss harder than it needs to be?

Every time you turn around there’s a new way to lose weight. From tripping your Skinny Switch to the latest in fitness machines someone seems to have an answer that is better than all of the rest.

While doing some work inside of Daily Burn recently I read a comment to a blog post that made more sense to me, concerning weight loss, than just about anything I’ve ever read on the subject. Long story short, the message was simple… reduce your food intake and get more exercise.

Let’s look at both sides of this formula for moment starting with the reduction of food intake. The simple reason people gain weight is because they consume high calorie and/or large quantities of food without burning it off. Food is fuel for our body, if we don’t use it then it’s stored as fat… pretty simple. Now, looking at the second half of this equation, exercise (movement, activity) burns off the food we take in.

If we look at ANY weight loss program or fitness machine we will see that they have been developed to help us either reduce our food intake and/or increase our exercise. Do we really need a fancy program or fitness machine to help us do this? Quite honestly, no we do not. Here’s why…

While there are those who will argue the point, the simple truth is that counting and monitoring calories is a great way to monitor food intake. It allows us to utilize simple math to determine the amount of FUEL we are consuming to make our body run. Utilizing the nutrition label on the side of a box for finding a free calorie calculator online will help us make this determination.

If we can commit to making this simple change to our life and understand that, in most cases, we can thrive on 1500 to 2000 calories per day (and we are willing to monitor that) then we can simply add some basic exercise (along with our daily routine) to burn the calories we need to lose weight. It’s really very simple!

As stated by the gentlemen whose comment I read on Daily Burn, he’s just making sure that he consumes no more than 2000 calories per day. To burn it off, he’s made the commitment to burn calories each day by walking at a steady pace for a half an hour. This is all he is doing and the weight is coming off. He also went on to mention that he’s eating whatever types of food he wants, he’s just staying inside the numerical limit of 2000.

If I may be so bold as to add my 2 cents here, this really comes down to a commitment on the part of the person who wants to lose the weight. You must make a decision and stick to it. Once you do that you will get the results you are looking for.

I find it very difficult to believe that anyone who says they want to lose weight couldn’t make a decision to start here, provided they have the physical capabilities to walk for a half an hour everyday. You have to want it if it’s every going to happen for you.

Labor Day Weight Loss Motivation Tips

LOL! … and here I thought I would be clever and come up with an inspirational post for everyone who attended the family barbecue today but ended up eating more than planned. In the process of coming up with content I just couldn’t come up with anything more than “it happens, get up and get back in the groove tomorrow.”

It just so happened, that at the time I decided to write this post, that I was doing a little keyword research when I ran across the key phrase “weight loss motivation tips.” It turns out that “weight loss motivation tips” are searched for on an average of 203 times per day over the three major search engines.

As someone who is working to drop the excessive weight I’ve been carrying around for years it took placing my life in Gods hands for five hours one October morning to motivate me after years of trying and failing.

I thought about running over to Google real quick to see what type of “weight loss motivation tips” are offered but I don’t know that there’s anything that anyone could say that would make a difference.

When it comes to making a decision to lose weight, if you don’t want it, it’s not going to happen no matter what anyone might have to say. While there are similarities we all share in why we’ve gained the weight, or why we want to take it off, every one of us is different and what motivated me to finally do it and stick with it is most likely completely different than what would motivate you.

This does bring to mind, however, a passage of scripture that should motivate all who believe… “know ye not that your body is the temple of the living God? Present your body holy, acceptable which is your reasonable service.”

Both our body and our mind are simply tools that the Spirit within us uses to accomplish the work needed to be of benefit to others. If our body and mind are not in the best possible condition then we are hindering this work.

Motivation or not, call it food for thought… keeping your body healthy and fit just makes good sense! Easier said than done for many, I know, and while I won’t be so naive as to sit here and say “if I can do it, you can…” I will say that, based on my experience, you’ll be glad that you made a decision to change.

Happy Labor Day!

What is your BMI (Body Mass Index)?

The other day, while chatting with someone online, the term BMI was used to share a persons size, versus their weight… but what does that mean to those of us who want to lose weight? While I had heard the term before I didn’t know how to calculate it, it’s significance in weight loss or if it was even that important.

After taking some time to do some research online, concerning BMI (Body Mass Index) I learned several interesting facts, including the importance thereof.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a calculation of both height and weight to determine on of four levels of health. Those four levels include underweight, normal, overweight and obese. BMI is used as a screening tool to calculate potential weight problems in adults.

While this tool is interesting, I still believe that my favorite two tools for estimating my weight and the amount I need to lose stand the test of time. Those tools are the mirror and the scales at the gym. When I look in the mirror I can easily see there’s a problem that needs to be resolved and the scales confirm it.

Nonetheless, I found a cool little Google Gadget for calculating BMI and have added it to the right hand column of Yesterdays Fat Guy if anyone would like to try it out. In running my numbers I found out that my current Body Mass Index is 39. My ideal (based on crunching some numbers) would be between 18 and 24 were my BMI to fall in the normal category for my height.

You just never know what you will learn when you take a few minutes to search the web.

Click either of the links in this post to learn more about BMI (Body Mass Index).

It’s not too late for summer weight loss!

Let me ask you a question. When summer started this year and you, or perhaps a friend, made a decision to shed those unwanted pounds before swim suit season, did you reach your goal?

Summer weight loss is a popular topic in the months that make up the spring season but how often do we hear about it after the fact? Just because fall is here does not mean that we won’t spend some time on a beach somewhere (on vacation perhaps) during the fall and winter months. What it most often means, though, is that if we’ve missed the mark, that we still need to lose weight regardless of the season.

Here are some great tips and ideas for losing those unwanted pounds that you weren’t able to shed with your original summer weight loss commitment.

1.) Fruits and vegetables – Just because the fall is approaching doesn’t mean that we can’t still enjoy those foods we love in the summer. However, the key to losing the unwanted weight is making sure that we chose the right foods. Fruits and vegetables are very popular in the summer months because they are light, refreshing and more welcome than heavy foods, especially during those hot scorching days when turning on oven is the last thing you want to do. More summer weight loss ideas!

2.) Gym Memberships- There are two times per year where a gym membership is most welcome… during those extremely hot months and also the extremely cold. Even a half an hour per day on a treadmill at the local gym can help you obtain the look that you want. You will find that most gym memberships will not break the bank. In fact, most memberships cost less per day than a cup of coffee or two.

3.) Sweat The Small Stuff - There are hundreds of tiny changes that you can make that add up quick when it comes to reducing calories and fat. Fast food is popular in the summer because it’s quick, easy and one less thing we have to cook. If you are going to eat fast food, skipping the mayo helps. Ordering tea or water versus soda makes a huge difference. Staying hydrated is also very important and helps the body remove impurities. Learn more about summer weight loss lifestyle changes here.

Next summer will here before you know it! Apply these changes now so you won’t have to worry about it next year!

How to burn fat and lose your belly

I’ve been doing more research on how to burn fat, especially that of belly fat. After all, burning fat equals greater weight loss. You would be amazed at how many theories, ideas and diets exist when it comes to the the subject of how to burn fat.

Most of my fat is stored in my mid section giving me a pear shape. While this has shrunk considerably since the start of my weight loss journey, I still have a a long ways to go before it’s all gone.

It just doesn’t seem like you can get rid of belly fat fast enough. For whatever reason you might want it gone, in my case, I seem to be losing the weight everywhere else but my gut. I know that it’s shrinking based on current tape measurement but, as I was telling my wife yesterday, I just don’t feel like the change has been that noticeable yet. You’d think that it would register with you, a bit more, when you were approaching the 50 lb. loss mark.

Nonetheless, onward and forward. What I’m doing at the gym combined with a proper diet and the use of GBG Energy Matrix as a fat burner is working well… I just need to be patient.

Here’s is a listing of some of the things I found online that you may find interesting or helpful. Some are a bit extreme so use caution and make sure to talk to your doctor or trainer before attempting any of this.

1.) The Ketogenic Diet – Most common use is the treatment of epilepsy in children by fooling the body. Seems like there’s a lot of that going around these days.

2.) Using green tea is also been linked to the burning of belly fat. I’ve noticed that there are several weight loss products that utilize green tea or a combination of green teas and caffeine to burn fat.

3.) Aerobic exercise and a healthy diet are highly recommended for the reduction of abdominal obesity.

4.) Grapefruit – I found several references online to the use of grape fruit for the reduction and elimination of belly fat.

5.) The Flat Belly Diet – Here’s a diet plan I found using Wikipedia. The claim is that a dieter can lose 7 pounds in 96 hours following this plan.

I hope you find this information useful, but again I must encourage you to seek the advice of a health or medical professional before making drastic changes.

Cheers!

How to (and why it’s helpful to) start a weight loss blog

Have you ever looked at the number of searches conducted on Google, everyday, containing the word “weight loss?” Check this out…

If you read into this there are several things that you can attribute to this type of demand for information…

1.) There are a lot of people in the world who want to lose weight
2.) There are a lot of people who want to sell weight loss products

I’m sure we could go on and on. My theory is this… the demand for information concerning weight loss is so huge because the failure rate is so high. I’ve looked at a few of the top ranking web sites concerning this and they report that “95% of those who lose weight eventually gain it back within three years. Beyond 3 years that failure rate is even worse.” I believe that much of the search for info is for people who have tried and failed once, twice or even more, but are still looking for that one thing that it going to make the difference.

I’d love to sit here and say that, at last, I’ve finally found the solution that has worked after all of these years, but the fact remains that I have a long way to go. In my mind I certainly “feel” and “believe” that things are different this time… so I better keep “believing” if I want the changes to stick this time around.

That being said, one of the things that his helping me stay on point is this blog. Creating this weight loss blog keeps me accountable which helps tremendously. It gives me a place to share the experience as well as “see” the results from a different perspective than I’ve seen them in before.

What’s more, it puts me in front of an audience that helps to hold me accountable. It also allows the the opportunity to be part of a network of people who are going through a similar change in their life.

While there are several key components to successful weight loss, a blog certainly helps if you are brave enough to share your experience with the world. If you have been struggling to lose the weight you want to lose I highly recommend that you give a weight loss blog some serious thought. It’s helping me, and as is demonstrated in the link menu on the right, it’s helping many others as well.

Starting a weight loss blog is not as difficult as it might seem. You can register for a free blog through Wordpress.com or Blogger.com. Even those with basic skills will find that it’s pretty easy to add content, share pictures and video… you might even make a little extra money promoting a few weight loss products.

Cheers!

Does your body have a Skinny Switch?

Have you ever seen that late night infomercial for a weight loss program called “The Skinny Switch?” Now this is an interesting concept when it comes to a weight loss plan.

Long story short (as I stated in an earlier post) the concept seems to be, again, throwing your body a curve ball.

The science of keeping your body guessing, regardless of any program you chose, seems to developing some merit. There are several weight loss and fitness programs that are embracing this concept of “confusing” or “fooling” your body.

While I have not done any extensive, shall we say, testing on these concepts, based on recent events, I’m confident enough to say that I must agree that there is something to this.

In short (because I’ve already written on this) I plateaued one week, made a drastic, unplanned switch the next week and dropped another six pounds over a five day period. Did I trip my “Skinny Switch”? Did I “confuse” my body? Was it the implementation of a new weight loss product? Was it all of the above?

While I’m no expert, I will say that… in my opinion (and this is only an opinion) that it seems to me that it would be in the best interest of those wanting to lose weight that they pick one program and stick with it unless it just doesn’t work for you.

My wife has decided to get in the game and has chosen this as a weight loss program. I think now that she sees that I’m finally getting serious about it that it’s time for her to start dropping the pounds as well. While I have chosen to do it through calorie counting and exercise, she ordered “The Skinny Switch.” It will be interesting to see how that works out for her.

When I first saw the program on TV, I was tempted to try it out but when you think about the past and how I put the weight on (no exercise and over eating) that by reversing the habits (a lot of exercising and healthy eating) that weight gain would turn to weight loss. Turns out, so far, I was right.

To each their own I guess, but if you really want to lose weight then a simple turn from the current bad habits to new healthy habits still fits the bill better than anything.

Have a great day!

Seared Tuna Nicoise – Coumadin Safe Version

Here’s a new recipe that just came in from Dr. Gourmet. This looks great and I’m looking forward to trying it out. You can’t go wrong with fish and vegetables when it comes to managing a weight loss diet plan.

Seared Tuna Nicoise - Coumadin Safe Recipe

Servings = 2 | Serving size =4 ounces fish with vegetables

Cooking Time = 30 Minutes

This recipe can be multiplied by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

This recipe is great served chilled.

Place the water in a large skillet over high heat. When it is at a slow boil, add the diced potatoes. Cook for about 10 minutes. Don’t allow the water to come to a full boil, but simmer slowly.

When the potatoes are al dente, scoop them out of the water to a strainer. Add the green beans to the remaining hot water and blanch until slightly tender.

While the beans are cooking, place the olive oil, vinegar, shallot, olives, oregano, salt and pepper in a large glass bowl and whisk until blended.

Use the tip of a sharp knife and gently pierce the tomatoes with a single 1/8th inch slit for each. Add the tomatoes to the bowl. When the beans are done, drain them and place them in the glass bowl along with the potatoes. Toss to coat well. Place the bowl in the microwave and set the timer for 1 minute but don’t start it just yet.

Wipe the skillet clean and place it over high heat. Spray lightly with olive oil and when the pan is hot add the tuna steaks. Sear for about 3 – 4 minutes on each side.

In the last minute of cooking, start the microwave to heat the sauce and veggies. When done place the tuna on a plate and top with the nicoise vegetables and sauce.

Even prepared coumadin safe, this looks great! I’ll be sharing more of these as they come in.

Cheers!

What makes people fat?

Here’s a question that was posed through a blog I just found when doing some searching in Google… what makes people fat? It was interesting to see what “the experts” (I guess that’s what you’d call them) had to say. View the article here.

The title of this article kind of struck a nerve with me… 7 Secrets Of The Highly Obese. Is it really a secret as to WHY people get fat? People get fat because they eat more than they should… pretty simple. Why they over eat would be more interesting than just “people get fat because they use a larger plate!” That’s genius! Ff course we use bigger plates, you can fit more on them… that’s not a secret!

The reasons people overeat… now that would be worth writing about. If we can understand why people overeat then it’s easier to help them, if they want the help. There were many reasons why I used to over eat.

1.) I like to eat! I like food and I used to eat of a lot of it because, you guessed it, I just liked to eat.

2.) I ate when I was angry or emotional. I spent a lot of years taking out my aggressions and life disappointments on food.

3.) I ate to get high. It’s true. Eating gave me a huge buzz! I looked forward to it, it was an escape and I figured if you are going to do it, you might as well do it right.

What changed? My mind! I changed my thinking so I could make better choices. A weight loss mindset is vital if you are going to launch a successful weight loss journey. Staring death in the face last October had a considerable impact on my choice to lose the weight as well.

I’m a firm believer that if you change your mind, your body will follow. When you change your mind your desires will change, you attitude will change. A quote from the Bible says that, in the conversion process, that we must be “transformed by the renewing of our mind.

Just as what we think has lead to the obesity and poor eating habits, what we think can turn things around in the opposite direction. Which choice will you make today?

Cheers!

Throwing your body a curveball? A weight loss strategy!

It’s interesting how the human body works when it comes to getting fit and losing weight. For five weeks I held to a solid routine that helped me drop a quick 21 pounds in the first four weeks, only to hit a plateau on week five, where I didn’t lose a pound.

Then last week, I hurt my back, start a new product, drastically decrease exercise and lost another six pounds, bringing me to my current weight of 294. Finally… back below 300 pounds for the first time since I can’t even remember.

In all of this, I got to thinking while I was at the gym today, about something I saw on TV recently that, perhaps, explains a little of what happened to me last week. In essence, it’s kind of like throwing your body a curve ball.

It seems as though that the more you change what you are doing to your body the better the results. There’s a popular fitness program right now that teaches something very similar to this theory. They call it muscle confusion. People are getting great results in a short period of time by putting their body through rigorous exercise. However, the change is that the exercise changes constantly.

This could very well explain part of why my weight dropped by another six pounds over the last week. Not only did my exercise level change but so did my diet. The only thing consistent over the last week was my calorie intake. I was very careful to make sure that I did not exceed the 1500 daily calorie budget. I’ve been following because of the fact that I was unable to the gym for five days.

Now that I’m back in the gym I’m having to take things easy so I don’t injur my back again. It will be interesting to see (this week) how my body responds to being back in calorie burning mode.

On a side note, I want to share something I’ve been eating with that is helping big time.   Now this isn’t going to be for everyone, but you can use it as a lunch or snack, it’s very filling and it really helps curb the appetite.  It’s a simple Tuna salad made up of 2 cups of lettuce, 1 can of Tuna (reduce by half for snack), a half a cup of thawed frozen peas or mixed veggies, a little pepper and a splash of light vinegar based dressing.  In total, you’re looking at a total of no more than 250 calories if you use a full can of Tuna.  I’ve been eating these for lunch and a snack.

Between that and the GBG Energy Matrix (which is helping with appetite suppression) I’m finding it very easy to stay within the remaining 1000 calories I’m alloting right now due to the limited daily exercise.   This week I’m only burning about 500 calories per workout due to the back but things ar improving and I expect to be adding more burn over the next two to three days.

Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you soon!

Calorie counting and weight loss, what I’ve learned!

Well, I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I’m an expert, because I’m not. When it comes to weight loss, nutrition, fitness, etc., I’m kind of a greenhorn. Nonetheless, here’s what I’m learning…

Managing calories to lose weight is not much different than managing money. Each day you have so much to spend based on your age, weight, activity, etc. The foods that you eat, of course, have a specific value in calories. Each time you eat something, you are spending from your daily calorie budget.

I’ve used a couple of different weight loss calculators, but to be honest, I don’t totally understand them. Most of them are telling me that I should be taking in more calories than I am. Let me show you what I’m talking about…

free calorie counter

The image above represents my current calculation based on my age, weight, height and activity level. Do you see how many calories it says I should be eating? Good grief, I’d explode! It could just be my lack of understanding (so any trainers out there, feel free to chime in on the comment board of this post) but that seems like an awful lot of food to me.

Then I looked at this information which popped up under my calorie calculations…

basic conversion of pounds to fat based on calories

… which made more sense. Now the graphics says that if I reduce what I should be eating by 500 calories per day then I can drop one pound per week. So, in my estimation, I figured if I could cut my intake by 1000 or even 1500 calories I could drop even more weight. That’s what I did. I’ve been consuming no more than 2000 calories per day (usually 1500 to 1750).

I’ve been burning a minimum of 800 calories per workout daily. I spend a half an hour on the treadmill at 3.7 mph at an incline between 7 and 9. I also do a half an hour on the elliptical machine as well as some basic muscle fitness working the back and arms on one day, legs and chest on alternate days. I’ve even been throwing in some basic exercises to work my abs like crunches and toe touches and then wrapping up each session with some time in both the steam room and the whirlpool (helps the sore muscles!)

Following this routine I dropped seven pounds last week. I haven’t felt like I have deprived my body, I’ve had plenty of energy and feel great!

Now keep in mind this is just a recording of my progress. I’m not suggesting that you go out and do that same thing. Make sure you talk to your doctor or trainer before trying anything like this.

The most significant change that I’ve noticed is that the more I learn and program into my mind, the more passionate I become about what I’m doing. As the mind can only focus on one thing at a time, if I’m focusing on the “management” of my daily intake then I’m not focusing on just eating or food. Focusing on the right things brings about change in your mind and your body.

I’ve heard people say things like “life is to short to count calories” or “I get enough exercise at work” and so on. I’ve also heard the same people gripe about being overweight and how they “should” go on a diet, blah, blah, blah. If you are serious about making a change, take action. Take action in your mind and your body will follow.
