How to identify a weight loss spammer

They say that controversy drives traffic and participation so we’ll see how people respond to this…

I was just going through Tweet Deck to see if I could find any content worth sharing when I found an article with a link to information on yoga for weight loss that I thought might be worth reading.  After reading the article the realization was that my time had been wasted.  My immediate impulse was to unfollow the person who had sent this Tweet.

Much of the information coming through Twitter anymore (depending on which topics your are following of course) is either blatant spam or glorified spam. A reputation as a weight loss spammer (or as a spammer on any subject for that matter) will result in the loss of followers, damage to your reputation and lack of revenue through your blog.

Glorified spam is content created for the sole purpose of feeding the reader bullsh** in trade for a response to advertising on their blog or website.  A click on AdSense, a product link, banner or other form of advertisement is the ultimate goal, not the benefit of the reader. It’s happening everywhere and it’s getting old. I don’t have a problem with people advertising on their blogs, or even within their articles, but come on… give the readers something in trade for their time! Is it going to take up that much or your time to offer a handful of tips or techniques that people can use to solve the problem in which they visited your content for in the first place?

I would prefer, that if people have something to sell, then just cut to the chase, send me the link and let me take a look. Don’t waste my time trying to trick me into clicking on something. If you really want me to click, retweet or share your content, make it worth my while. Give me something that I can use versus five to ten paragraphs of text that says absolutely nothing… I know that a screwdriver turns a screw. What happened to giving value when it comes to driving traffic and building a database?

If you are looking to generate income through AdSense, ads, links, etc. here are a few things to consider…

1.) You will get more click through’s on your advertising if you are getting return traffic. You will get return traffic if your content is helping people by answering a question or solving a problem. If someone has come to your weight loss blog looking to find information on how to use Yoga to lose weight, give them some basic tips. Put a video together, put it on YouTube and walk people through the basics. If you do this a couple of times you can then offer them something for sale, at a reasonable price, and not only will they buy it, they’ll tell their friends “look at this cool blog I found through Twitter! Take a look at this video!” If you want get viral traffic, give!

2.) If you want to sell a weight loss product (informational like an ebook through ClickBank), write a review of the product, show people results you have achieved through the use of the product via video and pictures and give them something as an added bonus with their purchase. There are a ton of freebies available online, on just about any subject you can imagine, that can be offered as in incentive. You might also consider starting a forum for clients or customers only where they can get personal advice from you on how to get the same results you did.

3.) If you are promoting a business opportunity or product then offer samples. Again, show people that you are not just some hustler. Show them that you practice what you preach and use what you sell. This makes an impact that most marketers are to lazy to create themselves, giving you an edge over the competition.

Something else you are going to want to prepare for, when it comes to using your blog or content to sell or endorse a product, is the new FCC regulation coming down on December 1st, 2009. According to Mashable this morning…

The FTC has updated its Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising for the first time since 1980, and among the changes, a requirement that “bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service.” Fines for violating the new rule will run up to $11,000 per post.

It’s pretty sad when the government has to get involved to regulate the behavior of those who are using content to generate income. Perhaps this will get people thinking about what they are doing online before they take action.

How to (and why to) write a good weight loss article

It might seem over simplified but it makes sense. If you are focusing energy on writing a weight loss article or content for your weight loss blog then you are not focusing on food and/or eating.

When it comes to losing weight one of the biggest challenges is changing habits. Taking your story to the Internet gives you an outlet… a place where you can focus on sharing information, tips, successes and even failures that might help someone else find success in the weight loss journey.

No one can tell your story like you so why not write it down? You don’t need to be an expert to share experiences. As you progress in your journey, and learn more about living a healthy lifestyle, the more information you will have that you can incorporate into writing.

If you put a little effort into it you can even get paid for your content through places like eHow, FireHow and more. Utilizing article sites is also a great way to get quicker search engine listings because most of the article sites have a high page rank. As your content has become part of the content of a site with a high page rank, it’s easier to get listed under better key phrases. From there, simply create an inbound link to your blog and you can generate larger volumes of traffic.

Creating great content is also a good way to generate traffic through the social networks. If you have something to say and are willing to give some actual value in your content (not just writing tidbits to attract sales as so many do…) then you can develop an audience that will help spread the word about your blog, bringing even more traffic.

Another good idea when it comes to creating content and giving exceptional value is to find a great incentive (gift) that you can give through your blog or article. If you have some experience in web publication you can even create an incentive package. (See the Mind and Body Makeover as an example.)

When writing a blog or article here are some things to consider:

1.) Open with a segment of your story. Share a problem that you have encountered, or a problem you have solved.

2.) Offer a list of tools or items one may need to solve the problem or answer a question.

3.) Create steps that walk the reader through the problem to the solution.

4.) Offer Do’s and Don’ts or suggestions, tips and or warnings.

eHow offers the perfect layout for creating articles, it’s free to join and you can even get paid for the content you create.

You won’t burn a ton of calories typing but focusing your efforts and giving and helping others, while sharing your story, will help you consume less of them!

How to make money with your weight loss story

weight loss money If you are going to start a weight loss blog and share your weight loss story then you might as well generate some income with it.

In todays economy, earning a few extra bucks every month can’t hurt.

You might even earn enough to pay for you gym membership, or if you put a little effort into it, make your car or house payment or more.

Here is a list of monetizing ideas to consider:

1.) Google AdSense – Incorporating Google AdSense into your weight loss blog is a good place to start. You earn income through Google each time someone clicks on an AdSense ad. If you look in the right hand margin of this blog you will see Google AdSense incorporated for search (upper right) as well as text ads (about mid way down). Creating an AdSense account is free. Simply log in to your Google account and click AdSense in the settings menu to get started. Approval usually happens in a couple of days.

2.) Affiliate Marketing – Places like Clickbank offer you the opportunity to sell the informational products of others as an affiliate. Clickbank is loaded with a ton of great information you can sell. People create e-books on just about any subject, to include weight loss, fitness and more. Clickbank is free to join.

3.) CPA – CPA is something I’m just getting into so I don’t have an abundance of information to share. In short, CPA advertising involves the marketing of incentives and offers that generate leads for a particular business or corporation. There is quite a bit of information available through Google on CPA, but make sure you do your homework and get the facts.

4.) Copy Writing – If you like to write and have time to create content for more than just your blog then you can get paid to create content. eHow.com is a resource where you can write to get traffic as well as a few extra bucks. I just joined this week and it’s well worth the effort. eHow articles optimize to Google quickly and create a great link from Google to your blog under key phrases you might not reach in the early stages of blog creation.

5.) Business Opportunities – Last, but not least, you can use your weight loss blog to generate interest in a business opportunity. Keep in mind that the ultimate level of professionalism will be required here. Terms like MLM, Business Opportunities, Work at Home, etc. have become dirty words over the years because of the underhanded methods people use to promote them. Spam is also another huge issue when it comes to business opportunities so be smart about HOW you incorporate it into your blog. Remember that your audience needs to be sold on you, not what you do. Trust and value through giving must be generated long before you just throw a business opportunity out there.

Always make sure to stay within your target market. If you are creating a weight loss story online then offer weight loss products, solutions, tips, services, etc. through your blog.

If you are smart about the way you do things, utilize value and incentives to reach your audience and put others before yourself then the success you see with your weight loss blog will, most likely, reach far higher than your expectations.

Cheers!

How to (and why it’s helpful to) start a weight loss blog

Have you ever looked at the number of searches conducted on Google, everyday, containing the word “weight loss?” Check this out…

If you read into this there are several things that you can attribute to this type of demand for information…

1.) There are a lot of people in the world who want to lose weight
2.) There are a lot of people who want to sell weight loss products

I’m sure we could go on and on. My theory is this… the demand for information concerning weight loss is so huge because the failure rate is so high. I’ve looked at a few of the top ranking web sites concerning this and they report that “95% of those who lose weight eventually gain it back within three years. Beyond 3 years that failure rate is even worse.” I believe that much of the search for info is for people who have tried and failed once, twice or even more, but are still looking for that one thing that it going to make the difference.

I’d love to sit here and say that, at last, I’ve finally found the solution that has worked after all of these years, but the fact remains that I have a long way to go. In my mind I certainly “feel” and “believe” that things are different this time… so I better keep “believing” if I want the changes to stick this time around.

That being said, one of the things that his helping me stay on point is this blog. Creating this weight loss blog keeps me accountable which helps tremendously. It gives me a place to share the experience as well as “see” the results from a different perspective than I’ve seen them in before.

What’s more, it puts me in front of an audience that helps to hold me accountable. It also allows the the opportunity to be part of a network of people who are going through a similar change in their life.

While there are several key components to successful weight loss, a blog certainly helps if you are brave enough to share your experience with the world. If you have been struggling to lose the weight you want to lose I highly recommend that you give a weight loss blog some serious thought. It’s helping me, and as is demonstrated in the link menu on the right, it’s helping many others as well.

Starting a weight loss blog is not as difficult as it might seem. You can register for a free blog through Wordpress.com or Blogger.com. Even those with basic skills will find that it’s pretty easy to add content, share pictures and video… you might even make a little extra money promoting a few weight loss products.

Cheers!
